The town of the Leaning Tower is certainly a university town!
The many young people strolling with their backpacks on their shoulders and their books under their arms among the monuments and the churches, the palaces and the villas of Pisa are a demonstration thereof.
The presence of two excellence schools like the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant`Anna (for more information read the following chapter of this tourist guide) is another demonstration thereof.
As well as the 11 faculties of a university that is almost 700 years old.

Clement VI`s papal edict that certifies the existence of a school for the teaching of theology, law and medicine dates back to 1343. Actually, for the sake of pedantry, some important schools had already existed for a couple of centuries in Pisa.

The history of the school followed that of the town and after a period of decadence, during which all activities were interrupted, in the late 16th century the school was riding high again.

The University of Pisa includes among its faculty celebrities of the calibre of Galileo Galilei. Moreover, three of its students have been conferred the Nobel Prize: Giosuè Carducci (Literature, in 1906), Enrico Fermi (Physics, in 1938) and Carlo Rubbia (Physics, in 1984). That is why the University of Pisa is one of the most prestigious universities in Italy.
