There is a strong relationship between Pisa and water.
And it could not be otherwise: one the ancient Maritime Republics, Pisa stretches along the most important Tuscan river and in the past built its fortune on sea travels. Even its most important folkloric events are tightly bound to this vital element.
So the lungarni that run along the Arno River have become important strolling streets.
“È uno spettacolo così bello, così magnifico, così gaio, così ridente che innamora; non ho visto niente di simile” (It is so beautiful, so wonderful, so lively and pleasant a sight. It is so captivating. I have never seen something similar): that is what Giacomo Leopardi wrote about the palaces and the bridges, the churches and the villas in this corner of Pisa during his stay in the Tuscan town.
Which are the main lungarni of Pisa?
The Arno River divides the Pisa into two areas: Tramontana, north of the river, and Mezzogiorno, on the south.
In the district of Tramontana are the Lungarno Mediceo (between Ponte alla Fortezza and Piazza Garibaldi) and the Lungarno Pacinotti (between Piazza Garibaldi and Ponte Solferino).
In the district called Mezzogiorno are the Lungarno Sonnino (between Ponte della Cittadella and Ponte Solferino), the Lungarno Gambacorti (between Ponte Solferino and Ponte di Mezzo - the most famous bridge of Pisa) and the Lungarno Galilei (between Ponte di Mezzo and Ponte alla Fortezza).
