In this chapter of our tourist guide to Pisa we do not want to present the umpteenth biography of Galileo Galilei. In the web there are plenty of sites dedicated to the life and works of the man who is considered the father of modern science.
We would simply like to suggest a trip among the residences and the palaces, the monuments and the villas of Pisa, on the track of the one who perfected the telescope and made it an instrument for astronomical observations.
Where was he born?
Where did he study and teach?
Where did he do some of his experiments?
The first stop of our tour is obviously the house where Galileo was born. The building is in via Giusti 24, in the district of Tramontana.
At the corner of Borgo Stretto and Via Mercati is a plaque that commemorates the place where "Vincenzo Galilei lived when the great Galileo was born".
In Palazzo della Sapienza, in Via Curtatone e Montanara, Galileo studied and worked as an academic.
It is at the top of the Leaning Tower and in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of the Assumption) that he elaborated some of his theories.
The town hosts also the so-called Domus Galileiana, an institution founded in 1942 that houses all of the literature on the illustrious Pisan and on those who have made the history of science.
Moreover, Regione Toscana, with the contribution of the University of Pisa and of other local institutions, organises "Pianeta Galileo".
So, leave your apartment or your vacation villa in Pisa at the discovery of Galileo Galilei`s town!
