Spending vacations in Florence without visiting the Uffizi is like committing a mortal sin!
The Uffizi Gallery was erected by Giorgio Vasari between 1560 and 1580 by order of the Medicis to house the administrative offices of the Tuscan state - hence the name Uffizi. In 1555 the Principality of Tuscan had conquered Siena, thus becoming the most important state in central Italy.
Now the halls of the building house the most important collection of paintings by Botticelli (including "The Birth of Venus", the painting that best represents the spirit of the Renaissance, and the "Primavera", just to mention two of them) and works by Cimabue and Giotto, Masaccio and Leonardo da Vinci ("The Annunciation"), Raphael and Titian (the "Venus of Urbino"), Michelangelo and Caravaggio ("Bacchus").
And the list could go on and on because in the museums are exhibited thousands of paintings dating back from the Middle Ages to more recent times, along with ancient sculptures, miniatures, tapestry and so on.
The many tourists that every day stand in queue waiting to enter are evidence of the fact that the Uffizi Gallery is the most visited art museum in Italy.
