Florence is divided into five districts: District 1, including the historic centre; District 2, or Campo di Marte (north-east); District 3, or Gavinana Galluzzo (south-east); District 4, or Isolotto and Legnaia (west); and District 5, or Rifredi (north-west).
Our tour of Florence goes on with a visit to District 3: Gavinana Galluzzo.
First of all, we should give credit where credit is due.
Considering the strong tie existing between the Florentines and their town, it is important to underline that Galluzzo was an autonomous municipality of about 22,000 inhabitants until the 1930s, when a Royal Decree established that its territory had to be divided among the municipalities of Florence, Scandicci and Bagno a Ripoli; what was left became the municipality of Impruneta.
At a first glance, you will see that most of the villas and apartments in this part of Florence where built during the 20th century. However, a second look will reveal the presence of an important "jewel". Atop a hill, surrounded by dark-green trees, stands the Certosa of Florence, a monastery dating back to the 14th century consisting in the church and the sacristy, the cloister and some workshops. A group of monks still live in the Certosa, which can be visited with interesting guided tours.
At the end of the visit of District 3, you can continue your tour at the discovery of the districts of Florence by reading the previous and the following pages of this short tourist guide.
