Florence is divided into five districts: District 1, including the historic centre; District 2, or Campo di Marte (north-east); District 3, or Gavinana Galluzzo (south-east); District 4, or Isolotto and Legnaia (west); and District 5, or Rifredi (north-west).
The historic centre is certainly the district with the highest concentration of masterpieces (see the previous chapters of this short tourist guide to Florence). Therefore, it is not by chance that UNESCO decided to include it in its list of World Heritage sites. In Florence historic centre you have the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti, Ponte Vecchio and the Park of the Cascine.
And the beauty and history of all of the palaces and apartments in Florence historic centre make them highly prestigious buildings.
Moreover, staying in an apartment in Florence historic centre means spending your holidays in one of the four historic quarters into which Florence was divided in the past; the same ones that have vied with each other since the Modern Age in the so-called "calcio storico", also known as "calcio in costume" (players wear a medieval garb): Santa Maria Novella (whose colour is red), San Giovanni (whose colour is green), Santa Croce (whose colour is azure) and Santo Spirito (whose colour is white).
In the following pages you will find some pieces of advice about what to do and see in the other districts of Florence.
