Many palaces of Florence are well worth a visit, if you are on holidays in the capital town of Tuscany.
To Palazzo Vecchio is dedicated the previous chapter of this short tourist guide.
After having left your apartment in Florence, you could visit Palazzo Pitti and Palazzo Medici Riccardi.
Palazzo Pitti was built on the south side of the river Arno (in the so-called Oltrarno district) by order of the homonymous family, and in the mid-16th century it passed in the hands of the Medicis. In 1565 Cosimo I de` Medici commissioned Vasari to design and realise what is now called Vasari Corridor, a passageway that connects Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti crossing the Arno over Ponte Vecchio.
Palazzo Pitti houses various museums, including the Porcelain Museum and the Palatine Gallery. Moreover, at its back stretches one of the most charming and well-preserved examples of Italian garden: the Boboli gardens (we advise you to visit them in spring and autumn).
The history of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, too, is indissolubly linked to that of the Medicis. Suffice it to say that Cosimo the Elder commissioned its building in the 15th century. Now, apart from being the headquarters of Florence provincial council, it houses art exhibitions, and with a single ticket tourists can visit the halls and the frescoes on the first floor, as well as the Chapel of the Magi, the courtyards and the garden.
And the list of the Florentine villas and palaces to visit continues with Palazzo Panciatichi, the Tower of the Pagliazza, Dante`s House...
