As in most Italian cities, even in Siena you can retrace the history of the town following its architectural development. Siena is in fact rich in buildings built in the course of the centuries and linked to particular political or religious events.
So if you have rented a holiday villa or a
farmhouse in Siena ,
you could organize some amusing and instructive tours of the town of the Palio at the discovery of the most important palaces and monuments.
Piazza del Campo and the Duomo, the Palazzo Pubblico (or Town Hall) with the Torre del Mangia and Saint Catherine`s sanctuary, Palazzo Chigi Saracini and the Hebrew Synagogue.
You could also visit the surroundings (Siena countryside is dotted with parish churches, castles, monasteries and abbeys) along the Via Francigena, like modern pilgrims.
However, we have decided to dedicate the following pages to what there is to see in the town that the ancient Romans called Saena Iulia.
In fact, even if Siena is a small town, "tall oaks from little acorn grows". And Siena is full of wonderful jewels!
Put on a pair of comfortable shoes, take your camera, a guidebook of the town and a block notes and ... have a nice trip to Siena between sacred and profane.
