Raise their hand those who have never watched on TV or at the cinema the Disney cartoon "The Sword in the Stone"; or those who have never read the novel by Terence Hanbury White dedicated to the myth of King Arthur.

When you will be told that the sword in the stone is just a few kilometres from your villa or farmhouse in Siena , you will certainly feel like laughing! But that is no fib: the sword in the stone is really near Siena, and precisely in Chiusdino.

Galgano was a medieval knight. Once arrived in Montesiepi following some mystic visions, he could find no wood to make a cross and threw his sword against a stone. The weapon stuck in the stone and it is still there in spite of the many attempts to extract it reported in stories and legends.
Today the stone with the sword is in a round building, a small church called Rotonda di Montesiepi.

Just a ten-minute walk from the Rotonda is the Abbey of San Galgano, an imposing Cistercian monastery in gothic style.
Like other English and German abbeys, San Galgano has got no roof.
Every year thousands of tourists visit the abbey, which is the ideal location for postcard-like photos, especially at sunset. And in the summer it becomes a theatre for classical music concerts.
