Villa Rospigliosi owes its name to Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi who, after having become Pope with the name of Clement IX, decided to have a villa built close to Pistoia, where his family had sheltered following Federico Barbarossa persecutions.
Giulio Rospigliosi commissioned the villa to the famous architect Gianlorenzo Bernini, but it was Bernini’s pupil Mattia de’ Rossi who followed the works.
Unfortunately, Clement IX could not live in the villa, because he died the year the works began. However, the villa belonged to the Rospigliosi family up until the beginning of the 20th century, when it was sold to the Schweiger family.
A 29-hectare park surrounds the villa, a severe building consisting in a central body and two three-storey wings. An ellipse-shaped chapel dating back to 1675 stands in the park. The papal coat of arms decorates the main entry of the villa.
