The first indisputable historical notes concerning Villa Garzoni, also called “Villa delle Cento Finestre” (Villa of the One Hundred Windows), date back to 1633, when the complex belonged to marquess Romano di Alessandro Garzoni.
The Garzoni were a powerful Ghibelline family from Pescia. When the Guelphs defeated the Ghibellines, all the goods belonging to the Garzoni family were confiscated and the family was forced to go into exile in Lucca. The Garzoni family went back to Pistoia when they decided to build a villa, after having made their fortune in Lucca.
A gorgeous garden surrounds the imposing building. The garden was finished in 1652 and architect Ottaviano Diodato renovated it in the course of the 18th century. In the garden stands also a red building. Designed by Filippo Juvarra, the building is considered one of the most interesting examples of Baroque architecture in Tuscany. Numerous statues decorate the garden.
