Firenzuola is a typical Tuscan village, situated in the upper Mugello, in the basin of the Santerno river and surrounded by Apennine woods. Its name means “little Florence” and actually it was founded by the Municipality of Florence in 1300 in order to contrast the power of the Ubaldini family, whose power was extending more and more over the Mugello territory.
A stop in Firenzuola will surely be pleasant: during your visit you’ll be able to find in the village traces of its medioeval past, as its two gates, the Florentine Gate and the Bolognese Gate, and the ruins of the old walls that once surround the village. In the basement of the Town Hall then, you can visit the rooms of the Museo della Pietra Serena (a grey stone), a typical stone in the Tuscan architecture used to pave the ancient streets in Florence, as well as the ancient villas in Mugello and the city luxury palaces.
All round Firenzuola there are numerous religious builidings, such as little churches or rural churches as the Pieve di Cornacchiaia and the Badia di San Pietro a Moscheta.
When the summer heat gets stronger, do as the inhabitants of Firenzuola do: go down to the river and take a refreshing bath. Your holiday evenings will pass happily among events and festivals dedicated to the typical food products or to the ancient trades of the place.
