Situated in the heart of the Sienese Chianti Classico region, Radda in Chianti lies atop a hill that marks the watershed between the valleys of the rivers Pesa and Arbia. Once member - along with Gaiole and Castellina - and hosting town of the headquarters of the ancient Lega del Chianti, Radda has always held an important strategic position, and in the course of the centuries has been at the centre of many conflicts.
Although not much remains of the defensive structures, apart from small pieces of the city walls, during your stay in the Chianti region you can visit the many castles and parish churches scattered in the surroundings of Radda.
Walking in the narrow streets of the city centre, you will see that Radda has maintained its original elliptical configuration and the buildings have kept their medieval structure. Once arrived in the main square, you will have the Palazzo del Podestà in front of you. The façade of the building is decorated with the coats of arms of those who have served the town as podestà.
The neighbourhood of Radda is dotted with interesting parish churches and abbeys, such as that of Santa Maria Novella and the magnificent convent of Santa Maria in Prato. Obviously, the area is rich also in castles. The best preserved one is that of Volpaia: its wide city walls and the donjon are still in perfect conditions. Only ruins remain of others, such as those of Albola and Monterinaldi. And others have been transformed into some of the most beautiful villas or farmhouses of the Chianti region: certainly an ideal place where to spend your holidays.
