The first thing to do after leaving your rented in Arezzo is to buy some loafs of bread and some slices of Tuscan cured ham at a grocer`s. Then you can start your walk towards Passeggio del Prato and the Medicean fortress.
Today will, in fact, be dedicated to nature and relaxation.
The Medicean fortress (305 metres above sea level) emerges above the palaces and apartments of the centre of Arezzo. Antonio da Sangallo the Young began the construction in the 1530s.
Some pieces found during the restoration works the fortress underwent in the 19th century, when it was acquired by the municipality, demonstrate that the fortalice ordered by Cosimo I de` Medici was built on a pre-existing military construction.
The most picturesque feature of the fortress is the wide green area at the front of building (which separates it from the Duomo).
Passeggio del Prato is a huge public area rich in tree-lined alleys and green meadows where the natives jog or relax reading a good book, and tourists take a nap or have a picnic.
Right in the middle of the Passeggio stands a monument dedicated to Petrarch by the Italian sculptor Alessandro Lazzerini.
