The Archaeological Museum (Via Margaritone 12) was founded in 1937 to house the Etruscan and Roman pieces found in Arezzo and the surrounding countryside. Its rooms are situated in a two-storey former Olivetan monastery dedicated to Saint Bernard.
The Diocesan Museum houses paintings, sculptures, sacred jewels and canonicals that in the past belonged to the various churches scattered in Arezzo and in its province. The museum is at the back of the Cathedral of San Donato and was founded in 1963.
The last part of this chapter of our tourist guide is dedicated to the Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art: the most recent of the three museums was inaugurated in 1972. It is in Via San Lorentino, not far from the homonymous gate, inside Palazzo Bruni-Ciocchi. The three-storey building houses 14th to 20th-century paintings and sculptures, ancient weapons and coins, Roman to Renaissance small bronzes and statues, as well as over 300 majolica wares produced by the main Italian factories.
