Established in 1975, this beautiful park has a really nice name due to the “Uccellina Mountains” that are in the middle of the park. The highest peak, Poggio dei Lecci (=holms knoll), is just 415m a.s.l., but these hills offer a beautiful view, very impressive, stretching to the sea and the islands, embracing the whole estuary of the river Ombrone.
The Natural Park of Maremma - this is the official name - is a mix of different landscapes:
- the “Paludi della Trappola” (=Swamps of the Trap), to the North of the Ombrone, which host many species of migratory waterfowl mostly in winter;
- the Pinewood, very large, to the left of the Ombrone, crossed by some drainage canals built by the Grand Duke of Lorraine in the eighteenth century;
- the mountain area in the south-central part (the Uccellina Mountains) covered by a dense Mediterranean maquis made of oak, holms, arbutus, mastic trees, gorses, bushes of rosemary and thyme;
- the coast, from Principina a Mare to Talamone, with more than 70 km of long sandy beaches that alternate with cliffs.
The fauna of the park is extremely rich: with a bit of luck you can spot wild boars, bucks, hares, deers, porcupines, badgers, foxes and other mammals.
The whole park is also full of archeological historical sites from all periods, including the interesting remains of the religious complex of San Rabanus and numerous defence towers built against the Turks from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The Towers of Uccellina, Castelmarino and Collelungo are still visitable today!
The park is open year round, seven days a week, from 8.30 to 17.00, but with entrance only up to 12:30. To visit the park you must purchase a ticket at one of the three Visitor Centres: Talamone (where you can visit also the Aquarium of the Turtles), Collecchio and Alberese. The latter is the central office, the only one open year-round, from which all the visit itineraries depart.
There are so many marvellous things to see that the organizers have drawn as many as 11 park itineraries on foot, of different lengths and difficulties, with various attractions. You can go into an itinerary alone or in groups, accompanied by a guide or not, depending on time of year and type of route.
Since Spring 2012 there is a news: the horse trails! They added to the already existing itineraries by bicycle, by canoe, by carriage and the night itineraries. You can find all the information on the official website of the Park: https://www.parco-maremma.it.
Last but not least, from this year at the Visitor Center in Albarese, the park administration offers, upon reservation, free tastings of typical products of the farms gathered in the Consortium "Naturalmente Toscana" (=Naturally Tuscany). Wine, oil, cold cuts, cheeses, sauces, sweets: all genuine, high quality products, from organic or integrated agriculture, made by enterprises closed to the Park …to experience nature "outside" and "inside".
